Biodegradation of Lindane (γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane) To Nontoxic End Products by Sequential Treatment with Three Mixed Anaerobic Microbial Cultures

چکیده
The γ isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), also known as lindane, is a carcinogenic persistent organic pollutant. Lindane was used worldwide an agricultural insecticide. Legacy soil and groundwater contamination with lindane other HCH isomers still big concern. biotic reductive dechlorination to nondesirable toxic lower chlorinated compounds such monochlorobenzene (MCB) benzene, among others, has been broadly documented. Here, we demonstrate that complete biodegradation nontoxic end products attainable using sequential treatment approach three mixed anaerobic microbial cultures referred culture I, II, III. Biaugmentation I achieved MCB benzene. Culture II able dechlorinate finally, III carried out methanogenic benzene degradation. Distinct Dehalobacter populations, corresponding different 16S rRNA amplicon sequence variants in were responsible for dechlorination, respectively. This study continues highlight key roles chlorobenzene- -respiring bacteria demonstrates specialized may be explored at field sites order address legacy HCH.

Novel Metabolites of Anaerobic Naphthalene Biodegradation by Pure Cultures
We have previously reported on anaerobic pure cultures that degrade naphthalene in the strict absence of oxygen. One of these pure cultures NAP-3 was phylogenetically most closely related to Pseudomonas stutzeri based on 16S rDNA sequences. Further studies in our laboratory have shown that the degradation of naphthalene was slow or nearly absent when volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were not present...
متن کاملSynergistic rhizosphere degradation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane) through the combinatorial plant-fungal action
Fungi are usually involved in degradation/deterioration of many anthropogenic wastes due to their verse enzyme secretions and adaptive capabilities. In this study, five dominant fungal strains were isolated from an aged lindane polluted site, they were all mixed (100 mg each) together with pent mushroom compost (SMC) and applied to lindane polluted soil (5 kg) at 10, 20, 30, 40% and control 0% ...
متن کاملSequential anaerobic/aerobic biodegradation of chloroethenes--aspects of field application.
Because of a range of different industrial activities, sites contaminated with chloroethenes are a world-wide problem. Chloroethenes can be biodegraded by reductive dechlorination under anaerobic conditions as well as by oxidation under aerobic conditions. The tendency of chloroethenes to undergo reductive dechlorination decreases with a decreasing number of chlorine substituents, whereas with ...
متن کاملBiodegradation of Benzene under Anaerobic Condition using Enriched Microbial Culture
Benzene is a highly toxic organic contaminant having carcinogenic potential and a serious ground water contaminant. Refinery industry is a major source of benzene contamination in the environment. The present paper focuses on biodegradation of benzene under anaerobic condition by using enriched microbial consortium. Enriched bacterial isolates, identified by 16S rRNA sequencing technique were t...
متن کاملBiodegradation of lindane by Pleurotus ostreatus via central composite design.
The degradation of lindane was studied in liquid-agitated cultures using a commercial strain of the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus as the biodegrading organism. The biodegradation was accomplished with the action of extracellular oxidative enzymes, produced by the fungus to decompose woody substrates. Enzyme activities of manganese peroxidase and laccase were measured in a liquid mineral medium. An...
